Yes, technology is changing media landscape, and a lot of certain age groups don’t listen to the ‘cockroach’, radio.
But – there was a lot of celebration in certain quarters as Glenn Beck left the cable tv arena.
But as Sue Wilson poined out when he lost is Fox “News” audience of 2 million, he retained his radio audience of 10 million.
Radio still works. If more people could hear things like Alternating Currents, it would work a lot better

  2. very fun interview, i’d like to be able to facebook like it? :) gimme a chance!

  3. My name is Jim Singer and I am the Media Coordinator for Webster University’s Internet radio station. We are located in St. Louis. I have attempted to encourage our students to use the station as more of a communication tool than to just play the same old tired tunes and say “that was” and “this is”. College is the right venue for more of what you have done here. The 2 Mosquitoes is the perfect use of the medium. I thought that your show moved along well, was entertaining, informative, and creative. The only thing I would suggest is that you watch your levels and background levels a bit. In the segment where the male begins talking the levels go down a bit and, in order to hear him better I have to turn the volume up. The problem is that the females mic level is fine so when she comes back in I have to turn the volume down a bit. I also noticed that, during Jim Elinger’s conversation, while the music itself was good, the background music volume was up a bit too much and competed for my attention while he was speaking. My suggestion is to keep the music in the “background” more and let the subject matter be clearly heard so the message intended gets through clearly. As a former Production Director I am trained to notice these things…maybe the average person wouldn’t so please take this into consideration. Overall I have done some pieces like this myself and know how much work goes into putting these things together. It takes creativity, talent, and technical skill. It’s obvious you both have passion for this. I wish the students here could take a tip from both of you on your excellent work! I look forward to hearing more from both of you. Best of luck with your future

    • Jim thank you so much for the critique and applause. I’m aware that the piece could be cleaned up more, but taking the advice of Ira Glass I’m trying to get out pieces rather than obsessing about perfection at the moment. I need to produce more volume to get where I know my pieces can be. I’m new to sound production and I haven’t gone to school for it yet. Just learning by doing. I’m working on my use of mic-ing and editing software. Feel free to email me at sara@altcurrents.com if you have any resources you would like to share. You expert advice is very welcomed.

  4. Nice job you guys-look forward to hearing more!

  5. Call me a cockroach fan, but I love radio! This was a wonderful piece on Jim Ellinger. He has been my neighbor and friend for years, but your article gave me a much greater appreciation and understanding of what he actually does.! Thank you and I look forward to hearing more from you both.

  6. Excellent work! This podcast is captivating, intriguing, multifaceted, provocative and mesmerizing. Well done. A great story, and a clear embodiment of the ideals that you and Jim Elinger hold dear. I’m looking forward to hearing more! (I second Jim’s above suggestion of evening out the mic sounds; Christian, it was hard to hear you, and the background music almost took over at one point. That being said, I think you both did a fantastic job of melding the music with the text.) Keep up the inspired and inspiring work!

  7. Walking in the prseence of giants here. Cool thinking all around!
